HONG KONG — Hong Kong’s largest generic drug maker has filed a legal challenge to a Hong Kong-listed online pharmacy that failed to provide clear warnings about the potential dangers of using the drug Viagra.

The online pharmacy said yesterday that it had found the website to be illegitimate and had warned it to be shut down without warning.

The website has been shut down for a year due to inadequate warnings and safety precautions, Hong Kong Customs and Excise said.

“We have received several reports of illegitimate online activity in response to our investigation,” the agency said.

The Hong Kong-listed website is registered by an individual from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, a country of Hong Kong and Singapore, and has been operating since 2014. It was listed on the Hong Kong Drug Register in 2014.

The website also contains links to numerous websites and services that are not listed on the Hong Kong Drug Register and have not been registered in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Customs and Excise said.

Hong Kong-listed pharmacy only sells medications that are made in the Hong Kong region and is based in Hong Kong and Singapore. It has no affiliation with a pharmacy in Hong Kong or Singapore.

The website had been shut down in April 2016 and is no longer in use.

In an order, Hong Kong Pharmaceutical Products Ltd said it had been notified of a lack of proper warnings regarding the sale of Viagra.

It said the company had not been able to verify whether the website was operating in a safe and non-regulated manner. The company had also not been contacted by the Hong Kong Drug Register regarding the legality of the sale of Viagra.

The Hong Kong Drug Register had not been updated.
